Tornado touches down in Angus

On Tuesday, June 17th an F2 tornado touched down in neighbouring Angus, Essa Township.

The storm, that destroyed more than 100 homes, brought heavy winds and pounding rain that extended to neighbouring communities including New Tecumseth.

Premier, Kathleen Wynne, issued the following statement in response to the severe weather system: “Today, the people of Angus and other communities across Ontario are dealing with the shock and devastation caused by last night’s tornado and severe thunderstorms. My thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their homes, and I will be visiting the area in the coming days to offer my support. Provincial officials, including those from the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management, are on the ground working closely with local representatives to assist the community. Thousands of homes have been left without power. Hydro One crews have made significant progress restoring power and are working as quickly as possible to bring everyone back online. I know that the people of Ontario are strong. The community has pulled together and is rallying around those who have been most impacted by the storm. This caring and compassion will help them as they rebuild.”

Simcoe–Grey MP Dr. Kellie Leitch also released a statement. “I would like to offer my sincerest thanks to our local OPP detachment, CFB Borden personnel, the Essa Township Fire Department and all other first responders for their incredible actions following yesterday’s tornado in Angus. Their quick response and their clear dedication to their community kept the people of Simcoe-Grey safe and undoubtedly helped ensure that this was not a larger tragedy. On behalf of the Government of Canada and our Prime Minister, I wish to applaud the people and emergency personnel of the Town of Angus and Essa Township. Their resilience is something that all Canadians can look to with pride.” Dr. Leitch says that she will continue to monitor the efforts of Emergency Management Ontario as they coordinate response and work with local officials.
