Phising scam involving CRA

April 30, 2015   ·   0 Comments

The Ontario Provincial Police are urging residents to be extra vigilant should they receive a phone call from someone claiming to be a representative from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) asking for personal information. These “phishing” and other fraudulent scams could result in identity and financial theft.
On Thursday, April 23, 2015 at 11:09 a.m., a Township of Southgate resident received a phone call from a male identifying himself as “Erik Stark” of the Canada Revenue Agency. The resident was told that he had been audited and that if he didn’t conform to the audit he would be arrested within the hour. The suspect wasn’t given the opportunity to ask about any personal or financial information as the resident found the phone call to be strange, ended the conversation, and called police.
The CRA is aware of an ongoing phishing scam similar to the incident reported to OPP. To learn more about this phishing scam, visit www.cra-arc.gc.ca/nwsrm/lrts/2014/l140307-eng.html
