Alliston Union Cemetery board sorry for error

Dear editor:
On behalf of the Alliston Union Cemetery Board of Directors and staff, I would like to apologize to the families who had items removed from their loved ones graves over this past week.
As part of recent and ongoing revisions to provincial legislation that the Board of Directors are governed by (Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002, S.O. 2002, c. 33), we have undertaken a recent review of our bylaws. This review included revisions to bylaws dating back to 1954. The Cemetery Board posted a public notice at the front entrance in October 2014 for six weeks, and again in the local newspaper last month, to notify the public of amendments made to the bylaws.
The notice that was in the Alliston Herald stated that families had until April 30th to remove any items that they wanted to keep. Regrettably and in error, items were collected prior to this deadline and not in a manner of which the Board would have approved. Unfortunately, we cannot undo what has occurred and as such want to offer our sincere apologies.
Cemetaries in Ontario have been mandated to focus on safety – not only public safety, but also employee safety. Items that are breakable, structurally unsound, or that deteriorate due to weathering and age can and do become safety hazards to both employees and visitors. A great deal of work, through dedication and volunteerism, goes into operating and maintaining a beautiful and peaceful resting place for our loved ones, and I am thankful for the tireless work of our staff and Board members.
On behalf of the Board and staff, I once again want to express my heartfelt apologies for these unfortunate and unnecessary circumstances, and look forward to continuing with the important work we do for the families of loved ones lost.
Ken Beattie
