The TNT Express played a full day of football at Mel Mitchell Athletic Fields in Beeton on Sunday, May 24, with four division taking to the gridiron. It was the second weekend in a row that the Express host a full slate of games on their home turf.
Atom division
The Atom division started the day when they hosted the Brampton Bulldogs with a 10 a.m. kick-off.
The Brampton team got off to a good start and went on an offensive drive early in the game scoring four touchdowns before the Express dug in their heals to slow down the Brampton team
TNT’s Crue Horst, Hunter Thom, and Dominic Plaunt worked well on the defence to shut down the Brampton squad, but the Bulldogs managed to score one more to end the half.
Going into the second half, the Express started off with a good run by Steven Frezell to gain some yards but again found themselves working hard on defence when the Bulldogs took back the ball. Tristian Monserrate, Austin Radzio, and Cameron Stewart were solid on defence but the squad couldn’t gain any ground and had to settle for a 49–0 loss to the visitors.
The Express Atoms will travel to Toronto on Saturday, May 30, to take on the Metro Toronto Wildcats.
Peewee division
The Peewee division game featured the Express hosting the York Simcoe Bucs.
The visitors opened the scoring in this game early in the first quarter then followed up with another TD. TNT’s Ethan Mahon broke through the line to block the kick on the convert attempt.
The Express made some good gains and a couple of solid runs by Keegan McDonald.
The Express got on the scoreboard when quarterback Jake Barker hit the mark on a pass to receiver Makais Harvey-Dick who sprinted across the goal for the only TNT goal of the game.
In the second half the Express dug in and stopped the Bucs from any more scoring.
Express players, Joseph Mete, Blake Williams, Ethan Mahon, RJ McGill, and Darren Bumstead had good tackles to stop the Bucs’ offence.
The game ended 24–6 with the Express taking the loss.
Bantam division
The Bantam division saw the Express host the Toronto Jets for a mid afternoon start.
The Toronto team opened the scoring in the first quarter with the Express stopping the convert on the attempt for extra points.
Battling hard, the Express had some spectacular moments including a quarterback sack when Owen McCann crashed through the line to drop the Jets back on yards.
A drive to the ten yard line left the Jets in scoring position and after holding on for a couple of the downs, the Express line broke and the Toronto teams scored the second TD of the game.
Returning for the second half, the game became bogged down at mid field when neither team could do much on the offence.
The game ended with a 12–0 win for Toronto.
Junior Varsity
The Junior Varsity game got underway with a late afternoon start with the Vaughan Rebels making the trip to Mel Mitchell Field.
The experienced Express JV team wasted no time getting down to business with Steven Noble making a 40 sprint down the sidelines for the first TD of the game.
That was followed up with another huge run by Justin Brewer for a second TD to give the Express a 12–0 lead early in the game.
Keeping up the pressure, the Express dominated the game and ended their second outing of the year with a 33–0 shut-out over the visitors.
The JV squad will be on the road for their next game when they travel to Oshawa on Saturday, May 30.
