Christmas goes up in smoke

The Rotary Club of Alliston hosted a ‘Twelfth Night’ celebration on Friday, January 8th. The event, an opportunity for residents to burn their Christmas trees, was tons of fun with hundreds in attendance. The Alliston Firefighters Association stood careful watch over the burning pile, while children took to the hills for an evening of tobogganing. Rotarians sold hot chocolate and kids, superstars in the making, used the neighbouring bandshell to practice their favorite hit songs in public. In history, Twelfth Night is a festival in some branches of Christianity marking the coming of the Epiphany, or the day when the nativity story tells us that the wise men visited the infant Jesus. In Western Church traditions, the Twelfth Night concludes the Twelve Days of Christmas, and various cultures have developed a range of special festivities to mark the occasion. A belief has arisen in modern times, that it is unlucky to leave Christmas decorations hanging after Twelfth Night – thus, here in New Tecumseth, even the tree itself gets burned!
