“Keanan’s Family Walk” took place Saturday, April 2 in Tottenham.
Now in its fourth year, the event attracted more than 120 participants, and raised $2,200 in memory of Keanan Allin Boston, a 21-month-old local boy who passed away in 2013. Keanan would have turned five on April 1.
The two-kilometer walk started and finished at the Tottenham Community & Fitness Centre, and proceeds from the event will support Sick Kids Hospital ($1,440), and the Alliston Early Years Centre ($760).
“We host this event to raise awareness for organ donation,” said Keanan’s dad, Kevin Boston. “Keanan’s heart, liver and kidney were donated to save three lives.”
The event takes place every April, in conjunction with Organ Donation Awareness Month.
“The Walk also recognizes and supports our family’s three areas of focus: the Alliston Early Years Centre, Trillium Gift of Life Network and Sick Kids Hospital,” explained Kevin. “Keanan’s Family Walk is a nice way to spend time outside, together and to meet new friends. Anyone is welcome to participate.”
Since the inaugural event, Keanan’s Family Walk has continued to grow in size. Just 30 participants took part in year one.
The Boston family raffled off prizes and provided goodies and hot and cold beverages at the event. They also had heart transplant recipient, Dave Allingham, address the group, sharing his experience with organ donation prior to the group’s departure.
Proceeds at the event are raised by donation, but donations are not mandatory to participate.
