The Tottenham Steam allowed three unanswered goals in the first period of their Saturday (Nov. 19) game against the Northumberland Stars and that period ended up costing them the game.
After getting blanked in the first frame the Steam brought it up a notch and played a solid two periods.
They outscored the Stars 4-3 in the second period to close the score to 5-4 at the end of the period.
Steam goals came from Viacheslav Chengrintcev for two, Jonathan DaSilva, and a shorthanded effort by Dmitri Russu.
Returning for the final period the Steam were trailing by two when the Stars scored early in the period.
Taking advantage of a power play the Steam set up in the Northumberland end and made it a 6-5 game when Dmitri Russu scored his second of the game mid-way in the period.
With a little more than half a period left the clock, the Steam battled hard to find the goal that would tie it up but they came up short and had to settle for a 6-5 loss.
The Steam have announced a new addition to their coaching line-up.
Former NHLer Mike Krushenlnyski has joined the team as an assistant coach.
Krushelnyski is a three-time Stanley Cup winner with the Edmonton Oilers and once as a coach for the Detroit Red Wings.
He will join Steam coach Dennis Maruk on the bench.
Krushenlnyski joined the squad during their recent win on the road against Northumberland.
In the League, the Niagara Whalers and the New Tecumseth Civics are tied for first place with 40 points each.
They are followed by the Kingsville Kings who have 37 points so far for the season.
The Steam will be back on home ice this Saturday night, Nov. 26, to host the St. George Ravens at the Tottenham Community Centre arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
