The Alliston Junior C Hornets improved their record to 23-2-1 over the weekend with a Friday (Dec. 8) night win over the Midland Flyers in Midland.
It didn’t take long for the Hornets to get things underway when Devon Gillham scored two goals early in the first period.
The Flyers got on the scoreboard less than a minute later to make it a 2-1 game.
Drake Board scored on a shorthanded effort at the mid-way mark in the period followed by a power play goal from Will Ferguson late in the frame to give the Alliston squad a 4-1 lead to end the first period.
Gillham got the hat-trick at 28 seconds into the second period.
The Hornets were leading 8-1 at the end of the second on goals from Will Ferguson, Jack Birkett, and Matt Hamilton.
The final period saw the Hornets extend their lead to 10-1 on goals from Birkett – his second of the game – and Will Ferguson – his second.
The Flyers managed to score twice in the third period but the Alliston squad matched them with Gillham scoring his fourth goal of the game at the 14:43 mark and Mark Stevens finishing off the night with the final Hornets goal to end the game 12-3.
The Hornets maintain a first place in the North Conference of the PJHL with 47 point, three points ahead of the second place Stayner Siskins.
Both teams are way ahead of the Huntsville Otters who hold on to the third spot with 24 points and a 12-15 record.
The Hornets will return to home ice at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre on Friday, Dec. 16, to host the Orillia Terriers. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
