Over the Family Day long weekend, 8-year-old New Tecumseth resident, Madison, cut off 20 inches of hair for donation to Angel Hair for Kids.
Madison was inspired to make the donation at her birthday party, held in the Rotary Club Room at the Gibson Centre in memory of her Great Aunt Lana who passed August 2016 of brain cancer.
Madison has also been collecting donations for two other charities she supports, ‘A Child’s Voice Foundation’ and St. Michael’s Foundation – Palliative Care Unit.
Lina Tavares, owner of Moda Hair Studio, donated her time to cut Madison’s hair, in front of 60 family members and friends. She also gave her a new look, that Madison selected from three styles she’d picked out herself (in the end, she went for a neat bob).
Local artist, Adrienne Baldassarra, owner of Small Inspirations Art Studio, also donated her time to face paint caner ribbons, of any colour, or any other design requested by the children in attendance.
Madison made donation jars, one for St. Michael’s and one for Angel Hair for Kids so that people could also donate in lieu of birthday presents.
“We are very proud of Madison and we hope she realizes what a wonderful, selfless thing she is doing,” said Madison’s grandmother, Brenda Lee Martin.
It took Miss Madison 8 years to grow her hair, and she told The Times although she was nervous, it was just the right day to cut it all off.
Madison and her grandmother (who cut her hair off to match Madison’s) plan to re-grow their hair together, and donate it once again.
