The Alliston Junior C Hornets have taken a 3-0 lead over the Stayner Siskins in the championship best-of-seven series for the Carruthers Division of the North Conference title of the PJHL.
The Siskins finished the regular season in first place so it’s a bit of a surprise that the Hornets could take the first three games and they did it with some pretty good results.
They blanked the Stayner squad 5-0 in game one on March 9, and they did it on the Siskins home ice.
Scoring came from Matt Hamilton, Drake Board for two, and a pair form Stephen Nosad – one on a shorthanded effort.
The return to the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre on Friday, March 10, saw the Siskins take an 2-1 lead in the first period.
That turned around in the second frame on goals from Nosad and Ryan Young to make it a 3-2 Alliston game entering the third period.
Goals from Young and Will Ferguson sealed the deal for a 5-3 Alliston win and the Hornets were leading the series by two games.
Game three of the series was back in Stayner on Sunday, March 12.
The teams played to a 2-2 tie in the first period then matched goal for goal in the second to enter the final period tied at three.
The third period was all Hornets when they scored three unanswered goals for the 6-3 win and found themselves one game away from a series win.
The series returned to Alliston on Tuesday (March 14) for game four with results not available at press time.
If the Hornets come out on top they will claim the 2016/17 Conference Championship and go on to play the winner of the Pollock Division in the North Conference final.
If the Siskins manage to keep the series alive, game five will take place in Stayner on Thursday, March 16.
