David Cameron of Alliston said yes to Encore (May 20, Ontario 49) and won $100,000. David matched six of the seven winning numbers on his Encore selection.
“I used a ticket checker to scan my ticket,” shared David while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto where he picked up his winnings. “I saw the words, ‘Big Winner’ appear on the screen and I thought it was just an ad.”
The married grandfather of two rescanned his ticket several times.
“I couldn’t believe it. There were too many people at the store so I decided to go home and return later. I went back to the store to validate my ticket. I said to the retailer, ‘I think I won $100,000!’ I handed the retailer my ticket and the terminal froze.”
The first thing that crossed David’s mind was the freedom this prize will offer.
“Life was about to get less stressful for myself and my wife. A big weight has been lifted off our shoulders. I waited until my wife returned from work to share the news. It was killing me. In the meantime, I bought her a card that said, ‘Welcome home.’ At the bottom of the card I wrote, ‘I thought I would change our Friday night routine just a little bit. See the next page.’ In tiny writing behind the fold I wrote, ‘We just won $100,000!’”
When David gave his wife the card, she didn’t believe him. “She thought it was a prank. I had to show her the validation slip over two days before she believed me.”
Plans are under way for David’s windfall.
“I will be putting my prize in a tax free account for myself and my wife. I would like to maybe take a trip with my wife. The Bahamas come to mind. We need a warm destination vacation. Winning the lottery feels like a weight has been lifted. It takes a long time to save up $100,000 so I am very grateful for this prize,” concluded David.
