Plans Move Forward for Beeton’s Heritage Celebration

August 8, 2017   ·   0 Comments

The presence at the celebration in the community centre at 1:30 on Sunday, Aug. 20 of Beeton’s NHL hockey players and executive is an outstanding event by itself.

Jim Rutherford, the General Manager of the Stanley Cup winning Pittsburgh Penguins, is one of the recipients of the Jim Milligan Heritage Award. As a general manager, Jim has guided three different squads to win the Stanley Cup and one to the finals. Jim will be joined by Wayne Carleton, who scored over 20 goals for the Boston Bruins when they won the Stanley Cup in the early 1970s with the great Bobby Orr as a team leader. John Gould played over 500 games in his NHL career with Vancouver, Atlanta and Buffalo. Warren Holmes is flying in from Texas to receive his award for the time he spent with the Los Angeles Kings.

There is presently over 30 former players and/or their families who will be present representing Beeton’s great successes in the 1950s in senior and junior hockey. There are a dozen former players who are in their mid to late ‘80s who are planning to attend. Some of these players have not seen each other in over 50 years. The players are from the 1952 and 1956 senior teams as well as the 1953 and 1954 junior teams.

The committee has not yet been able to get contact information for former players, Tom Collins, Bill Murray, Orren Norton, Hughey MacDonald, Ian McLean and Danny Kearns. Any help would be appreciated.

The heritage church service at 10 a.m. in the park features David Pegg, a former teacher at the Beeton public school. David entertains with his guitar and singing at many local senior homes. It appears that his voice improves with age. Bert Platt who wrote the history of Beeton will be speaking about many of the historical features that are found in the Community Park area.

Ron Pegg, the founder of Beeton Minor Hockey 62 years ago will be making a brief presentation on the significance of the churches that were built in Beeton in the late 1800s.

The mobile unit of the Life 100.3 Christian Radio Street Team will be part of the service.

For any further information please contact Ron Pegg at 519-924-3538 or email crpegg@bmts.com or call Pat Cranston at 705-436-1347.
