On Monday, October 23, The Honda Canada Foundation announced a $750,000 donation in support of the Matthews House Hospice (MHH), Alliston.

These monies, directed to the current MHH $8 million capital campaign, “Walking The Journey Together”, will be used to help expand services for families in New Tecumseth and surrounding areas, by building a “centre for excellence”.

Currently divided into two locations – the residential hospice at Kingsmere Retirement Village, and the community hospice on Highway 89 – the new MHH campaign will see the construction of one new building on Wellington Street, with amalgamated service offering.

Matthews House launched the campaign in 2016, and funds raised will build a new, state-of-the-art 10-bed facility.

Honda’s donation will directly support the construction of the new facility and provide additional hospice services and palliative support for families in the community.

“As a supporter of Matthews House Hospice since they opened their doors in 2004, the Honda Canada Foundation is pleased to strengthen our partnership with this significant $750,000 donation,” said Bill Easdale, senior vice president of Honda of Canada Mfg. and vice chair of the Honda Canada Foundation. “We are honoured to be a part of this project that will accommodate the growing needs of patients and their families in and around this community.”

“Matthews House has grown with South Simcoe to deliver the care and comfort that our community needs,” said Margo Cooney, president, Matthews House. “We are fortunate to have such a committed community partner in Honda – they have always been a positive advocate, providing assistance in many ways. We thank them for their tremendous support for this very worthwhile project.”

In addition to the Honda Canada Foundation, established with the goal of “enhancing the lives and social well-being of Canadian communities”, Honda Canada Manufacturing Alliston also supports a number of not-for-profit agencies, and employs more than 4000 residents in New Tecumseth.

Matthews House supports people at end of life, their families, and those living with a life-limiting illness. They also provide grief counselling and caregiver support.
