With gratitude, love the Worrods

The 10th Annual Michael Worrod Memorial Golf Tournament, which took place on Saturday, July 15, at Glen Eagle Golf Course in Bolton, was another huge success.

The event, held in memory of Michael Worrod, a Tottenham resident who passed away in a traffic accident on December 18, 2007, is just one way his parents, Kerry and Betty Worrod, give back to the community while keeping their son’s memory alive.

Proceeds from the fundraiser have supported several local charities and not-for-profit organizations over the years, including: Children’s Wish Foundation, Our Town Foodbank (Tottenham–Beeton), Help The Kids Play, Matthews House Hospice, Sunshine Kids Camping, Tottenham & District Lions Club Inc., South Simcoe Arts Council, and Coventry Park. They also give funds directly to local children and their families, who are in immediate need.

“The goal of this tournament is to keep Michael’s memory and outlook on life alive,” Michael’s father, Kerry Worrod, told The Times. “Generosity was a key quality Michael portrayed and he is often remembered for giving his help to whoever needed it at any time.”

Despite their ongoing grief, especially near the holidays, Kerry and Betty continue to host this tournament as a way to remember Michael because, “Michael was an exceptional athlete who was involved in a number of sports.”

“Michael’s sportsmanship and all around positive attitude towards his coaches, teammates and sport itself gave Michael a well-respected name in the Tottenham community. Giving back to local charities and sports facilities will continue our legacy of giving back to the community in memory of Michael,” said Kerry.

This year, the tournament raised close to $19,000, bringing the 10 year total to over $127,000.

• Help the Kids Play – $4000
• Our Town Foodbank – $3500
• Matthews House Hospice – $2000
• Tottenham & District Lions Club Inc. – $1500

Since the events inception, local artist, Marg Eagan, has been hand painting wine glasses and steins for golfers. This year, she created unique creations for everyone who registered.

“We can’t thank Marg enough for all she’s done for us over the years,” said Kerry. “It was a big job this year, and she still wanted to hand paint a special keepsake for everyone. It brought a special element to our tenth annual event, and we couldn’t be more grateful.”

Tickets for the 11th annual Tourney, to be held on July 14, 2018, will go on sale in early April.
