The winners of the 2017 Christmas Window Decorating Contest, hosted by the Alliston BIA, were recently chosen by a panel of five judges, representing local media organizations.

Each judge voted on their own, and sent in their picks, looking at: lighting, Christmas themes, and a bonus for “RURBAN” flare.

And the winners are:

1st Place – Tender Touch Laundry Services… And Sew On, located at 70 Victoria St. E.

2nd   Place – McDermott Insurance, at 14 Victoria St. E.

3rd  Place – Brisco  Furniture & Appliance, at 43 Victoria St. W.

Honourable Mention to The Clothes Line – Contact Community Services, at 55 Victoria St. W.

Tender Touch owner Judy Carver is pictured here with the five Christmas trees inside her full service laundromat. Judy says she has this many trees because her customers have a lot of children who love to look at the decorations while their parents do laundry, or drop-off sewing.

This window includes a ceramics display featuring Victorian era carollers, all hand-crafted by Ms. Carver.

This is the first year that Carver took part in the window decorating contest, and she’s glad she took part.

“Everybody loves coming here,” Carver told The Times. “I also decorated my window for Remembrance Day with pictures of Veterans surrounded by poppies. My customers really enjoyed it.”

British by birth but “Canadian by choice”, Carver sews badges onto the uniforms of all local service groups at no cost.

“I work with Veterans, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides and Cadets,” Carver said. “I never charge because I just believe in giving back. I’ve lived here for 18 years now, and this is my home.”

At Tender Touch, Carver offers full-service (drop-off or pick-up) and do-it-yourself laundry and sewing services. She also volunteered during the summer floods and washed clothes and bedding for affected residents without charging.

“If there’s ever a fire or a flood, I’ll be the first one to help out,” said Carver. “Oh, and everybody is getting a hug if they need it too.”

Carver was thrilled to win this year’s ABIA Christmas Window Contest, and is already planning her decorating for the next contest.

2nd Place – Brisco Furniture & Appliances put together a warm and inviting window display, featuring characters from Disney’s hit movie, ’Frozen’.

3rd Place – McDermott Insurance always goes “all-out” when it comes to promoting a theme. They are well known for their Potato Festival window display, featuring Mr. Potato Head.
