On Monday February 19, the Beeton–Tottenham Business Improvement Association (BTBIA) will host a Family Day Free Skate at the Tottenham Community & Fitness Centre.

Skate times are 11 a.m. – 12:20 p.m. and 12:30 – 1:50 p.m., and additional activities will be hosted in the gymnasium.

Free ‘Shop Local’ reusable tote bags will be distributed to the first 100 people through the door.

“This is a great way to have fun together as a community,” said BTBIA coordinator, Susan Iacoucci. “It is also a great opportunity to promote local business.”

Local business owners are also involved, and have donated items for the loot bags, and/or will be on site with information table at either venue.

Another opportunity is to set up a table at the arena and promote your business. You can have marketing material, handouts and you have the opportunity to engage with the community and it shows your community support.

Family Day was first observed in Canada in the province of Alberta in 1990, followed by Saskatchewan in 2007 and Ontario in 2008. On May 28, 2012, the BC government announced that Family Day would be observed on the second Monday in February each year, starting February 11, 2013.

Family Day was originally created to give people time to spend with their families but it also provides a day off between New Year’s Day and Good Friday as they are approximately three months apart.

Family Day is not a statutory holiday in Canada, as it is only observed in New Brunswick, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and in British Columbia.

Two other provinces have holidays in February: In PEI Islander Day is celebrated on the third Monday in February and in Manitoba the third Monday in February is the Louis Riel Day holiday.

As such, federal workers work on Family Day, including post office employees and public servants.
