Ward 3 Councillor JJ Paul Whiteside as been appointed to serve as alternate County Council Councillor.
“This afternoon I took my oath of office as Alternate Simcoe County Councillor for the Town of New Tecumseth,” wrote Town of New Tecumseth Ward 3 Councillor, JJ Paul Whiteside.
Mr. Whiteside is pictured here with John Daly, Simcoe County Clerk/Director of Legislative Services.
The Times asked, and Whiteside answered:
Why is there a need for an alternate? Effective at the beginning of this year the province of Ontario now permits lower tier municipalities to appoint an Alternate County Councillor to represent the Town at County Council in the event that the Mayor or Deputy Mayor are unable to attend a County Council meeting.
How were you selected? I was appointed by bylaw by New Tecumseth Council.
Why did you put your name forward? I felt I had the knowledge, experience and time to serve in this capacity for the Town.
Are you running in the fall for Ward 3 again, or Deputy Mayor or Mayor? I have made no decision at this time regarding the upcoming municipal election.
A brief history about your career in politics, please: During the 1970s I served on the Town of Alliston Planning Board and Committee of Adjustment. In 1980 I was elected to the Alliston Public Utilities Commission and was chair of the Commission in 1982 when I resigned and was appointed Treasurer/Deputy Clerk for the Town of Alliston. A position I held until amalgamation. At the time of amalgamation, I was appointed Chief Financial Officer/Treasurer for the Town of New Tecumseth, a position I held until my retirement in 2010. In the Fall of 2010, I was elected as Ward 3 Councillor for the Town of New Tecumseth, the position I still hold.
What are your responsibilities at the county level during your term? In the absence of the Mayor or Deputy Mayor I fill their vacancy at County Council Meetings and Committees which the absent member serves on. The Alternate County Council member has the same voting rights as the absent Mayor or Deputy Mayor.
What is the term? My term ends with the term of this Council, which is the end of November 2018.
“I consider this an honour to have been chosen to represent the Town of New Tecumseth as the Alternate County Councillor,” said Whiteside. “I will do my utmost to represent the Town and its residents at the upper-tier level of government.”
