Matthews House Hospice annual Hike for Hospice took place on Sunday, May 6, with more than $100,000 raised through pledges and sponsorships for the local hospice.
Matthews House Hospice (MHH) is a registered charity offering caring, compassionate support to individuals, caregivers, and loved ones facing a life-limiting illness or grieving a loss.
In 2017, the event raised $70,000, and all funds raised for the not-for-profit organization directly support programs and services for families and friends in the local community.
This year. 38 teams participated in the Hike, held at the Adjala–Tosorontio Municipal Office, with many wearing t-shirts in honour their loved ones.
The 2018 MHH Hike for Hospice sponsors are: Lions International, LT Realties Inc., McDonald's, Herbert's Western Wear, TD Bank, RBC, Teeter Excavating, County of Simcoe, Enbridge, Alliston Flooring, Total Sports, Wray's Guardian Pharmacy, Water Depot Alliston, Rock Solid Computer Services.
Now in its seventh year, Hike for Hospice is the Matthews House main fundraiser of the year.
A golf tournament will also be held on Wednesday, September 12, and the MHH annual Gala, with this years' theme of “An Evening in Paris”, will take place on Friday, September 28.
“Matthews House would like to thank the Township of Adjala Tosorontio for supplying the venue, with special mention to Mayor Mary Small Brett who problem solved like a pro!” said Andrea Roylance, Manager, Gifts and Gratitude, MHH. “Much gratitude to the many hikers – over 300, volunteers, sponsors of both dollars and in kind services, vendors and of course our amazing community who continues to support compassionate hospice care.”
Congratulations goes out to the Unsung Heroes team for collecting close to $10,000 in the pledges – the most raised by a team, and to Glen Kendrie for raising the most overall as an individual – over $3,000.
Matthews House Hospice is now nearing completion of its new ten bed Centre of Excellence for end of life and palliative care, to assist community members throughout South Simcoe.
“We are actively looking to engage interest, support and donations for our new facility,” said Roylance. “As a palliative care hub, the new facility will combine both community and residential care, support groups for residents and families including education regarding end of life/palliative care.”
“We are proud to provide programs and support services to families in Bradford, Innisfil, Essa, New Tecumseth and Adjala-Tosorontio,” adds Roylance. “We all deserve the opportunity to live life to its fullest. Matthews House exists in South Simcoe to deliver programs, without cost, and is here to help you, your family and your friends through those difficult times. Our dedicated support team made of professional and devoted volunteers ensures that everyone involved in the illness and the end-of-life process has the physical and emotional support they need to achieve the best possible quality of life together.”
