Nominations open for Simcoe County Pride Awards

July 13, 2018   ·   0 Comments

Do you know someone who celebrates gender diversity and promotes inclusion? They just might be the perfect person to nominate for the annual Simcoe County Pride Awards.

The awards, which will be given out during the Seventh Annual Simcoe Pride, which will be held July 30 through August 12, recognize the accomplishments of gender and sexually diverse (GSD) individuals, allies, organizations and inclusive businesses. Through the awards program, which honours Youth, Person, Organization, Business, Community of the Year, as well as an Honourary Award for the Art, Simcoe Pride recognizes the work of individuals and organizations that promote GSD and inclusion.

Nominations close this Friday, July 13, and the nominees will be announced July 23.

Each submission will be reviewed by the Awards Committee. The award recipients are voted on by a secret ballot by a Jury Panel supervised by the co-chairs of the Committee. The Panel is assembled from members of the Board of Directors and five members of the public.

“The purpose of the awards is to recognize the work that our community is doing on a day to day basis,” says Brandon Rhéal Amyot, President of Fierté Simcoe Pride. “The program includes people, businesses, community organizations, municipalities, and this year our honourary award is for artists and that includes all kinds of art forms. My no means is it limited to one type of art. The idea is that it fosters community engagement and it gives some bang for all the work that is being done. It helps raise up the work that is being done for the community to see. It is thanking them for the work they are doing to make this county an even better place for them to live, work and grow.

“Nominees and recipients typically have been people who have been really involved in the community and typically for some time. However, we have had a few nominees who are new to the game, who have really given it their all in the time they have been involved. I find typically it is nominees who are involved in a lot of different things. People in our community typically aren’t just doing one thing. A lot of them could be nominated in other categories. All of our nominees have been high calibre, hard-working and I would expect nothing less for this year. I can’t give anything away, but as the person who manages the nominations, we have received some really amazing nominations so far. We’re really excited to be able to release that list once the nomination period closes.

“We really think it is important to raise up the voices from across Simcoe County. It is a really great way to not only give someone a pat on the back for the work they are doing now, but it is often a great catalyst for those people to work even harder in the future and really make a difference in the community moving forward.”

Plans are currently underway in developing a full slate of events for Simcoe Pride Week. While the pride flag will be raised at New Tecumseth’s Town Hall on Thursday, August 2, at 12 noon, the organization would like to hear from anyone interested in holding an event of their own.
