By Wendy Gabrek

There are three candidates vying for the position of Ward 3 councillor in the fall 2018 election.

Incumbent JJ Paul Whiteside has thrown his hat into the ring for the position of Deputy Mayor, leaving the Alliston (central) ward wide open. Your candidates are: John Crate, Paul Foster and Chris Rapin.

We asked, they answered. Here are fourteen things you should know about your candidates (printed verbatim):

John Crate

Full Name: John Crate

Town of Residence: New Tecumseth

Length of time in New Tecumseth: 10 Years in New Tecumseth

Primary reason you're running: To work for the residents of ward and to be sure their concerns have a voice on town council.

Campaign slogan: Working Together.

What are our most important challenges facing the community? There will always be challenges, but by implementing steps to ease them, we should take care of  assets and investments such as roads, infrastructure, and places that our community values.

What do you cherish most about this community? I cherish the way people care about our municipality, and how they unite to make a difference.

What type of leader you will be? A councillor's role is to be a strong advocate for the residents of his/her ward.

What are your priorities for change in our municipality, in the short term. What about in the long term? Short term and long term changes must be met with the growth of our community.

What are the biggest fiscal challenges in our municipality, and what do you envision as the best way(s) to address them? Fiscal challenges, is to strengthen the local economy. We must handle rapid growth while still supporting our rural and farming areas.

What innovative projects would enhance life in this area? Infrastructure, commercial growth, encourage and support businesses to employ, and keep our local economy strong.

What is your perspective on the best way to collaborate with other levels of government to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for our area?  We must always keep New Tecumseth prosperous, and by working together with all levels of governments. Keeping our municipality sustainable for the future.

How do you envision communicating with constituents? I will be available to my constituents at all times, I encourage them to voice any concerns or issues that they feel should be addressed.

What will you do to continue to be involved with the community should you not win? To work with various committees and support groups, and continue supporting our community.

Paul Foster

Full Name: Paul David Foster

Town of Residence: Alliston

Length of time in New Tecumseth: 20 years

Primary reason you're running: I love the town and want to be part of shaping its future.

Campaign slogan: “Integrity matters”

What are our most important challenges facing the community? Fiscal, development and infrastructure challenges are the top 3.

What do you cherish most about this community? Number 1 would be the people. The 3 distinct downtown areas and the character that it adds to the overall makeup of the town.

What type of leader you will be?  I will be a leader that commits to the following. I will engage people in healthy open and honest debate. I will ask and answer tough questions honestly and respectfully. I will work to build consensus among my peers. I will always give straight answers that are truthful.

What are your priorities for change in our municipality, in the short term. What about in the long term? I think that the next council has to make an unwavering commitment to work in a unified fashion. This does not mean that everyone has to agree all the time it simply means that common goals have to be established and followed for the benefit of all residents in both the rural and urban areas, all 3 downtowns and our business community. This will have impacts in both the short and long term.

What are the biggest fiscal challenges in our municipality, and what do you envision as the best way(s) to address them? The biggest challenges are maintaining fiscal responsibility while addressing the needs for new infrastructure, and or upgrading/replacing existing infrastructure. The best way to address the challenge is to have a united council that sees the big picture and collectively works for the betterment of all.

What innovative projects would enhance life in this area? The UBER project in innisfil is a perfect example of out of the box thinking. I am sure there are many other innovative ideas that other communities are implementing. I would embrace any idea that may work to make New Tecumseth better.

What is your perspective on the best way to collaborate with other levels of government to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for our area? We are not on an island here in New Tecumseth and the relationship with Simcoe County, Province of Ontario and the Federal government is paramount to our success. We need to build and maintain relationships with all levels of government and be constantly aware of programs that are being offered and make sure that they understand that we are a partner that is both willing and easy to work with.

How do you envision communicating with constituents? I live essentially in the geographical center of ward 3. I am always walking, biking through Alliston. I prefer the old fashioned face to face communication but understand that this is not always possible. I will be readily available by phone, e-mail and have even improved thanks to my many nieces and nephews my Facebook skills.

What will you do to continue to be involved with the community should you not win? I have always believed that giving back to one's community is paramount that will not change whether I win or lose in ward 3.

Chris Rapin

Full Name: Chris Rapin

Town of Residence: Alliston

Length of time in New Tecumseth: Since 1999 (19 years)

Primary reason you're running: In New Tecumseth, I would like to see more opportunities for residents to be active and engaged in our community.

Increasing community fitness and reducing the costs associated with active living will be one of my top priorities.

Campaign slogan: Recapturing our Youth

What are our most important challenges facing the community? I see one of the biggest challenges for the future of New Tecumseth may be maintaining a sense of community as our town continues to grow. Our residents will need opportunities to come together through a variety of events and activities.

What do you cherish most about this community? My favourite thing about New Tecumseth is the friendly residents, whether you are in the busiest areas of town, or the smallest neighbourhoods, the people are friendly and willing to help you out.

What type of leader you will be? I hope to lead through the lens of the future, bringing new and innovative resources and ideas to New Tecumseth.

What are your priorities for change in our municipality, in the short term. What about in the long term? I feel that our community could offer more opportunities for active living. I would like to see a reduction, or the elimination of user fees for our youth. Residents under the age of 14 could access popular winter past times like shinny or public skating, or swimming at the town pool in the summer months for free. In the long term I feel that New Tecumseth would benefit from a post secondary institution, and an organization like the YMCA.

Establishing a community centre that is truly a community centre that focuses on many different avenues of interest instead of just a select few.

What innovative projects would enhance life in this area? Speaking specifically to Ward 3, I feel that a hiking trail along the Boyne River would be a great addition to our recreational commitments. Regarding all of New Tecumseth I would love to see Participaction Trails established once again.

What is your perspective on the best way to collaborate with other levels of government to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for our area? Understanding fully what my community wants and needs will be the first part of collaboration with other levels of government. Presenting a unified front with the other councillors would be the next step. My collaborations will show a willingness to seek out creative alternatives when the need arises, along with maintaining open lines of communication.

How do you envision communicating with constituents? I would like to be available to all constituents. I am open to communicate with residents via the phone, email, text message, and messenger (when I'm not eating, sleeping or teaching). I will be visible in my ward consistently, including a weekly Saturday morning run/jog that will be open to any willing to join me.

What will you do to continue to be involved with the community should you not win? I currently run the Ice Elements Hockey program with help and support from some great people within our community and will continue to do so regardless of the election results. I am passionate about giving the youth an opportunity to play sports at an affordable price.
