The Alliston Hornets have taken an early lead in the division standings after a weekend that saw them win at home but give up an overtime loss on the road.

Friday, September 21’s home game against the Huntsville Otters got off to a rocky start when Huntsville managed to get two penalties, a warm up violation and a pre-game violation, before the game even started.

Alliston took advantage with forward Finn Reeves scoring on the powerplay just 58 seconds into the game.

It took just a minute-and a-half before more trouble broke out and both teams were given misconducts.

Reves got his second of the game, again on a powerplay at the 5:09 mark in the first period.

The first period ended with two more Alliston goals from Jack Becks and Adam Hoppe.

The Hornets were leading 6 – 0 at the end of the second period when they blanked the Otters for the frame on goals from Keegan Gilles-McAnulty and Caden Maher.

The Otters finally got on the scoreboard in the third period with a pair of goals but it was too little too late.

The Hornets left the ice with a 6 – 4 win – their third of the season.

The squad was back at it two nights later when the travelled to Caledon to take on the Golden Hawks.

A goal from Braydon Hogarth at 1:40 into the first period gave the Hornets a lead but that’s all they could do for the night.

Caledon tied the game at 1:33 into the second.

Neither team could get the tie-breaker and the game went into overtime to decide the winner.

The Golden Hawks got the winner at 2:05 into the overtime period to take the game 2-1.

The Hornets have moved into first place in the division with seven points.

Orillia, Huntsville, and Caledon, all have six points.

It will take a while to see how the league shakes out this year.

The Hornets don’t have a home game this weekend. They will be travelling up to Midland on Friday night to take on the Flyers.

They return to home ice at the NTRC on Friday, October 5, to host the Schomberg Cougars.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.
