The Rotary Club of Alliston and the Town of New Tecumseth celebrate End Polio Now Week in New Tecumseth, October 22–29, 2018.
As a symbol of the commitment to eradicate polio world-wide, a ceremony was held recently to read the proclamation and to raise the End Polio Now flag.
Polio is a virus that is transmitted through contact with human feces in contaminated food and water. Tests are done to determine the level of the virus in water associated with sewage treatment plants, canals and sewers. Immunization results when the virus is detected and when children show the early symptoms of the disease.
In 2017, Rotary and its partners immunized 430 million children in 39 countries, including Afghanistan, Indonesia, Iraq, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nigeria, Pakistan, South Sudan, and Syria.
These are all countries where there are civil strife and displaced people, natural disasters, poverty, poor sanitation and food sources, and geographic difficulties. Yet scientists, health care workers, doctors, and Rotary volunteers did the job. Unfortunately, some of them lost their lives in trying to deliver the oral vaccine to infected children. Such was their commitment to the cause of a polio-free world.
Only three countries remain endemic to the polio virus: Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria.
The Rotary Club of Alliston thanks Mayor Milne and New Tecumseth council for their participation in the flag-raising initiative to sustain awareness of the polio-eradication campaign. Thanks goes out also to our donors: Rotarians and The Rotary Foundation; the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; and the government of Canada.
“We also thank our other partners that have been with us since the beginning: WHO, CDC, and UNICEF,” said Rotarian Joan Hayward. “We fly the End Polio Now flag as a symbol of our continuing commitment to keep the promise we gave to the children of the world – a polio-free world.”
