New United Way funding available for youth-led community projects

January 4, 2019   ·   0 Comments

Simcoe Muskoka youth aged 14-22 wanting to reduce poverty in their community can now apply for funding to turn their vision into reality.

United Way Simcoe Muskoka’s (UWSM) Youth United fund is now accepting applications for one-time grants of up to $2,500 for each project or community investment led by groups of up to six imaginative youth. Applications are due February 28, 2019 via an online portal.

“Youth United encourages young people to understand and get involved in the issues affecting their communities – and take ownership of the solutions from their unique perspective,” says UWSM Community Impact Programs Coordinator Jenna Thorkildsen. “The program also provides leadership skills, workplace experience, networking opportunities and, for high school participants, volunteer hours to help meet their graduation criteria.”

All projects must take place in Simcoe County, Muskoka and/or The Town of Blue Mountains, and be undertaken in collaboration with registered charity acting in the role of Community Agency Partner.

For additional details, visit UWSM’s information/application portal at UWSimcoeMuskoka.force.com/youthunited.

Wanted: Youth Council Members

“In addition to project leaders, we’re also recruiting for our Youth Council,” Thorkildsen adds. “These young people (aged 14-24) help decide which Youth United projects receive funding. Council members need to work well within a team environment, be able to meet deadlines and possess a desire to lead change in their community. In addition to volunteer hours, they’ll gain committee experience and have a chance to develop their leadership skills.”
