Members of the Nottawasaga Foundation, founded by Lou and Sue Biffis – owners of the Nottawasaga Inn & Resort – presented a cheque for $5,000 to Out of the Cold directors on Wednesday, December 19, 2018.

The funds, raised during the Nottawasaga Foundations annual charity golf tournament, held each year in July, will be used towards the shelter’s Sponsor a Bed program, which covers all aspects of maintaining a safe, warm bed for New Tecumseth’s homeless population (and overflow from Barrie shelters as well).

“Costs include stocking shelves with food, paying utility bills and meeting the needs of our guests,” Shelter Director Jeni Pergentile told The Times.

Out of the Cold operates from a donated church building on Paris Street, Alliston, and is open from November 1 through April 30. This is the second year that Out of the Cold has been operational in Alliston.

Guests of the shelter must be over the age of 16, and Pergentile confirms that they have had residents from age 17 through 82 stay with them. Most are men.

“We operate a twelve-bed shelter and have housed about 65 people already this year,” Pergentle confirmed. “Last year we had five hundred and ninety-three visits, with costs exceeding fifty thousand dollars.”

By the time of this writing in 2018, they have had just one night without overnight guests.

Out of the Cold also offers a hot meal program, and anyone in need of dinner can attend – no questions asked, no obligation to stay overnight.

Meals are served from 5:30–7 p.m. nightly, followed by a brief shelter closure from 7–7:30 p.m. to setup beds. The overnight shelter then opens at 7:30 p.m.
