Alliston Legion looking to raise $100K to offset roof repair costs

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 171 Alliston needs to raise $100,000 to repair the roof of their building on Dufferin Street by spring 2019.

Although temporary measures were taken to help control leaking over the winter months, the roof repair costs have exceeded six figures and branch members must come up with the funds before the thaw through private fundraising and donations.

The Raise the Roof fundraiser at the Legion began six weeks ago, and, to date, members have raised $8,000 – including a $2,000 donation from Domino’s Pizza Alliston.

Co-owner of Domino’s, Robert Hiltz, presented the Legion with a cheque for $2,000 on Tuesday, December 18 – proceeds from a pizza fundraiser held on December 11, where $3 from every $6 one-topping large pizza ordered was donated to the legion roof project.

Hiltz topped-up the evenings proceeds to make an even $2,000 and Legion members were more than happy to interrupt their regular business to accept the big cheque (and the real cheque).

The Legion hosts a weekly Men’s Dart Night every Thursday, and orders pizza from Domino’s for their guests. Learning of the ‘Raise the Roof’ fundraiser while delivering their pizza, Hiltz decided to take action and help a great local cause.

“This legion branch supports us, so in turn we’ve decided to help them,” Hiltz told The Times. “We are always here to help out.”

Alliston Legion member Dave Webber, who started the campaign, said he was entirely grateful to Hiltz and the Domino’s team for their support.

“I can’t thank Rob enough,” he said.

Legion president Paul Glass introduced Hiltz and his Assistant Manager, Crystal Layte, at the regular meeting and also thanked them for the assistance and the exposure.

Following the cheque presentation and photos, Legion members individually shook Hiltz’s hand, and gave him a round of applause.
