It has been a wild semi-final series between the Alliston Hornets and the Caledon Golden Hawks to see who can come out on top in the Carruthers division playoffs.

Alliston took the lead with a win in Game One of the series on Wednesday, February 20.

After a scoreless first period, Alliston’s Braydon Hogarth opened the scoring with a short-handed effort in the second period.

The Alliston squad went ahead by two on a goal from Garret Watson.

Caledon scored early in the third period but that’s all they could do for the night and the Hornets left the ice with a one game lead to start the series.

The teams were back at on Friday night, February 22, again at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre in Alliston.

Hornet’s forward, Joey Visconti, got the game opener on a powerplay in the first period.

The Golden Hawks took the lead on two late period goals.

The Hawks went ahead 3-1 on a powerplay early in the second period.

It was all tied up when Ryan Sallows and Rhys Brown scored for Alliston.

The second period was a physically rough 20 minutes with a lot of body contact and a lot of payback that set the tone for the period.

When the teams returned for the third period, they settled down and worked on trying to break the tie.

Mitch Livingstone scored on a powerplay at 1:20 into the period.

With two minutes left on the clock, the Alliston fans thought they were going to see another win, but the Hawks put the extra attacker on the ice and scored off a face-off to tie the game with 1:09 left on the clock to force an overtime period.

There was no scoring in OT and the teams returned for a second overtime period.

The Hornets clinched the game when Ryan McReynolds hit the back of the Caledon net at 2:17 into the second overtime period.

Game Three in Caledon on Sunday, February 24, saw the Hawks take a two goal lead by the end of the first frame.

Alliston’s Jack Beck scored in the second to put the Hornets on the board.

Mathiau Young got his second of the night for Caledon to make it a 3-1 game with one period left to go.

Both teams scored one in the third period to end the game with a 4-2 win for the Hawks and make it a 2-1 series with the Hornets in the lead.

In the other semi-final series, the Penetang Kings, who finished fourth in the regular season standings have upset the first place Stayner Siskins and are leading that series 3-0 after Sunday, February 24’s game in Stayner ended with a 3-2 overtime win for the Kings.

Game Four of the Alliston / Caledon series was scheduled for Tuesday, February 26, in Caledon with results not available at press time.
