72 Banting students depart for Europe

Alliston’s Banting Memorial High School has given 72 of its students an opportunity to experience history outside of the classroom.
On Wednesday, March 6, 72 of the school’s students, along with seven teachers, boarded a flight bound for Paris, France, to begin an 10-day trip, which will include participating in the 75th D-Day Remembrance Ceremony.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students to step back into history,” explains supervising teacher for the trip, Robert Howatson. “Not only will they visit the the Juno Beach Centre, a Canadian war museum, they will be participating in their own student-led ceremony on Juno Beach.”
During this time, the Banting Memorial High School students will learn Canada’s pivotal role in the war effort and D-Day specifically.
In addition to participating in the 75th D-Day Remembrance Ceremony, the students will also visit historic battle sites, memorials and resting places including the Canadian War Cemetery, Omaha Beach, Dieppe, Vimy Ridge and Flanders Fields.
