On Wednesday, March 27, the Alliston & District Lions Club held a special dinner with guests from local charitable organizations.

The networking event, aimed at giving community members a chance to meet and hopefully work together, was the first cheque presentation ever held by the Lions – with $11,500 in cheques going out in a special ceremony.

Funds were raised during Lions run community events, including their biggest money makers, the Alliston Potato Festival Beer Gardens, and the Boyne River Duck Race (taking place June 1st this year in Riverdale Park).

“One hundred per cent of the funds raised by the Alliston Lions Club go back into the community to organizations, groups and charities that require assistance,” said Lion Jaime Karsch.

“The camps we donate to are run by the Lions Clubs in Ontario and we make annual contributions,” said Alliston & District Lions Club president, Alison Stumpo. “People from our community have the opportunity to attend the camps that meet their specific needs.”

The Alliston Lions also donate to local community groups that provide service within the Lions Club International focus areas. They donate an average of $20,000 annually to the following:

• Vision – Guide Dogs, Library for Daisy Readers

• Youth – Scouts, Girl Guides, MOBYSS Mental Health Mobile Clinic, TNT Minor Baseball, Gibson Centre for Arts, Alliston Hornets, EPIC Duathalon, Effective Speaking Contest

• Diabetes – Sir Frederick Banting Foundation

• Hunger – Christmas Hamper campaign and donations to Food Bank

• Environment – Tree planting and road clean ups

• Childhood Cancer – Gilda’s Club Barrie, Matthews House Hospice

• Humanitarian – Legion Poppy Fund, My Sisters Place, Contact Diamonds and Denim

• Lions Club International Foundation – This funds disaster relief, such as help given to Angus, ON, after the tornado (June 2014) to assist local families

• Special Fundraisers – Hanley Park for accessible features, childhood cancer and diabetes.

Upcoming events:

• Alliston Lions Club Annual Pancake Breakfast with the Easter Bunny – Sunday April 7th, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Pancake breakfast supplied by the Lions Club, admission by donation of non perishable food, which will be donated to the Good Shepherd Food Bank, Alliston.

• Boyne River Classic Duck Race, Saturday June 1st – a great family fun day in Allison.

• Walk for Dog Guides – Saturday, September 21st. Followed by a barbecue.
