On March 30, 120 people gathered at the Tottenham Community & Fitness Centre for the seventh annual Keanan Family Walk, raising $4,500 and counting towards the purchase of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Unit for the Alliston Early ON Child and Family Centre – the first outdoor AED Unit, available to the public, in New Tecumseth.

The Walk, hosted by Kevin and Cheryl Boston, in memory of their son Keanan who passed away on January 22, 2013, surrounded by everyone who loved him, is a celebration of their son’s legacy as well as his birthday.

Over the years, the Walk has also raised funds for The Hospital for Sick Children.

“We also promote organ donation awareness at this event since Keanan saved the lives of three people [by donating his] heart, liver and kidney,” said Cheryl Boston, Keanan’s mom. “Coincidentally enough, April 1 is the kick off of Organ Donation month. This year, we were so excited to focus our fundraising efforts on the installation of an outdoor AED unit at the EarlyON Centre in Alliston – making this the first outdoor unit in New Tecumseth! In keeping with our hero’s legacy to help others, we chose this life-saving device to be installed at a place very dear to our family. As a new mom, this is where I spent many hours with him as a baby and to this day with Connor and Shannon [our other two children].

“We strongly believe an outdoor defibrillator will benefit the businesses and residences local to the EarlyON Centre located at 13 Wellington Street, Alliston. The benefits of an outdoor defibrillator are endless and if one life is saved, that’s another life [Keanan] helped to save.”

The cost to install an outdoor defibrillator ranges, as it requires heating, alarm, maintenance, and more.

“We are not letting the financial hurdle get in the way!” added Kevin Boston, Keanan’s dad.

Additional donations intended for the EarlyON Child and Family Centre Alliston can be sent to (cheque only): EarlyON, 13 Wellington St W, Alliston, ON L9R 1J3 or phone 705 435-4308 to support the outdoor defibrillator campaign.
