The eighth annual Matthews House Hospice ‘Hike for Hospice’ took place on Sunday, May 5, from the Adjala–Tosorontio Municipal Centre. This year’s event raised $130,000 and counting (towards an ambitious $150,000 goal), through participant pledges and sponsorships.

Matthews House Hospice (MHH) is a registered charity offering caring, compassionate support to individuals, caregivers, and loved ones facing a life-limiting illness or grieving a loss.

In 2017, the event raised $70,000, and in 2018 the event surpassed the $100,000 goal – raising $110,000.

This year more than 650 walkers took part on 44 teams, with many wearing t-shirts in honour their loved ones.

The 2019 Hike for Hospice sponsors are: Kingsmere Retirement Residences, Lions International, Safari Kids Indoor Playground, McDonald’s, Adjala–Tosorontio Township, 400 Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Ram, RBC Royal Bank, Enbridge, Water Depot Alliston, Alliston Flooring, Zehrs Alliston, Total Sports, Greenwood Ready Mix Ltd., Rock Solid Computer Services, Brookfield Residential, Scotiabank, Triumph Tool Ltd.

“Thankfully, Mother Nature cooperated this year with a beautiful sunny 19-degree day.  A big hit was the Selffee cookie booth where you could have your photo printed on a sugar cookie,” said Andrea Roylance, Gifts and Gratitude MHH. “The mini horses, Red Robin and Whisper kicked off the hikers at noon. Many thanks to all our donors, supporters, hikers and volunteers.”

“This year more than ever, we needed your support. Matthews House Hospice made its official move to our new ‘Centre of Excellence’ in Alliston last summer. Our new ten bed facility is a hub for education, wellness and compassion. We are proud to provide program and support services to families in Bradford, Innisfil, Essa, New Tecumseth and Adjala–Tosorontio,” said organizers. “Hike for Matthews House Hospice is our second largest fundraiser…Thank you to everyone who attended, donated, sponsored and volunteered.”

“As a palliative care hub, Matthews House combines both community and residential care, support groups for residents and families including education regarding end of life/palliative care,” said Roylance. “We all deserve the opportunity to live life to its fullest. Matthews House exists in South Simcoe to deliver programs, without cost, and is here to help you, your family and your friends through those difficult times. Our dedicated support team made of professional and devoted volunteers ensures that everyone involved in the illness and the end-of-life process has the physical and emotional support they need to achieve the best possible quality of life together.”
