Eden Grill, located at 13 Young Street Alliston (in the home of the former Domino’s Pizza), celebrated its grand opening and ribbon cutting on Thursday, July 11.

The restaurant serves Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine, specializing in shawarma, gyro, kebab and falafel, and is owned by Morres Chelebi and his wife, Lina Sarkes.

Morres started the restaurant with his wife, after moving to the area. Conceptualized from the ground up, Morres told The Times he saw a need for a Mediterranean restaurant in the community.

“I didn’t see a lot food choices locally with international selections,” said Morres. “So, I took my chances and opened my own restaurant.”

Naming Eden Grill was a long process, and Morres took the responsibility very seriously.

“After looking at a lot of naming options, I decided to name our restaurant after the Garden of Eden from the bible,” Morres said, adding that the name fit with his religious beliefs.

Eden Garden’s logo was designed to look like a shawarma, and is also the letter ‘e’ for Eden. Morres worked his friend Alan to create the image.

Morres told The Times the basis of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern is green veggies.

“Our food is the basis of healthy eating,” said Morres. “The menu offers a lot of ‘mezze’, or appetizer choices, made from healthy natural ingredients such as chickpeas, eggplant and other vegetables.”

“You can walk in here and get a nice green salad with protein,” adds Morres. “Keeping you full and satisfying your nutritional requirements.

Eden Grill does not use frozen foods, and ingredients are sourced locally, with meat from L&M Meats in Beeton, and chicken from Mississauga.

“Everything is fresh and store marinated for 12–24 hours,” added Morres.

Currently, seven local people work at Eden Grill.

“Nine including wife and myself,” said Morres, who said the restaurant will continue to hire as demand increases.

Morres told The Times he and Lina moved to Alliston with their children, to give them a better chance. They appreciate the smaller classroom sizes, and value for the dollar regarding housing options.

“We love it here, I don’t think we’ll ever live anywhere else – well, I know my wife won’t for sure,” said Morres.

As for the reception from the community, Morres reports it has been greater than expected.

“If you look at our social media and our reviews, everyone is going crazy for our food,” said Morres. “The population dynamic is changing in New Tecumseth. A lot of people are moving here from the city and want that ‘city flavour’. And, obviously our high-quality food is helping us too.”

On why you should try Eden Garden, Morres says: “We are family owned, family started, and we serve fresh food. We plan to keep it like that for a long time.”

Eden Grill Alliston is open Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. – with new hours added as required.
