The New Tec Extreme men’s ball hockey team have won the national men’s ball hockey championship after travelling to St. John’s Newfoundland and going undefeated in the tournament to win the title on August 10.

The Extreme won over the host team from Newfoundland in the final game in front of a packed arena.

“The previous summer, we won the provincial championship so we got to represent Ontario,” explained team manager Carlo Carlucci. “The two teams that actually got to the final of the provincial championship represented Ontario the following year. The Extreme and the other team based out of Toronto were the two teams that earned their way to the nationals.”

At this level of competition, they are the top teams in the country.

“You can almost call this the NHL of ball hockey,” Carlucci explained. “It’s the men’s A division. There’s no other level above it. They are all 18 to 30-year-olds for the most part and it’s all city or AllStar teams.”

Nine teams were entered in the championship tournament representing almost all the provinces.

While most provincial teams hand pick players from around the province to be on the team, the Extreme were unusual as they played in the tournament as their own team.

The Extreme were undefeated in the tournament winning six games and playing to a tie in one game.

“We ended up playing the host Newfoundland team in the final,” Carlucci said. “They had the exact same record as we did when we met them in the final. They were host team and they were definitely the favourite. The arena was full. They really support ball hockey out there. There was probably a 1,000 to 1,200 people in the stands. I wouldn’t say it was a hostile environment, but it was definitely a hometown crowd. Newfoundland has been known for many years to have very high-level teams. On the Newfoundland team almost every player plays some kind of semi-professional ice hockey.”

The Extreme team had 20 players to roll four lines during the game. In ball hockey you have to have enough players to rotate because of the amount of physical activity on the floor.

“Our players were pretty banged up and hurt. There was a lot of players playing through the pain. That was the most amazing thing from my point of view. I was on the bench and got to witness first hand the tenacity of these players.”

This was the fist time in eight years the Ontario has won a medal in the competition.

In addition to the championship trophy the team was presented with a certificate of recognition from the Town of New Tecumseth to honour their championship win.
