On Saturday, September 21, the Montessori Family School celebrated 10 years of laughing and learning in Alliston.

The two-hour event, organized by school founder Rachel Coleman, included a garden family mixer for current students and returning alumni.

Coleman says she began her school in Alliston because she wanted to provide an “authentic Montessori experience that was a happy, healthy and a peaceful place” for her daughter to grow… along with a handful of friends.

“We had been attending a satellite school of The Montessori Country School in Nobleton, which they had opened here in Alliston,” Coleman told The Times of the school beginnings. “I had been the directress of the school for one year, and after only two years in operation, they decided to close their doors.”

Several parents then approached Coleman to take over the school.

“The only way I could do it was to bring the school into my home,” Coleman said. “It felt right and I knew immediately that I wanted to call it The Montessori Family School because we felt like a little family.”

“With the support of the parents, I began to create a beautiful Montessori classroom within my century home and I officially opened the doors in 2008,” added Coleman. “Since then we’ve been laughing, learning and growing together.”

Over the past 10 years, 27 children have been part of the fun at MFS and Coleman says she remains connected to her students even after they move on to elementary school.

“It’s been an absolute joy to provide a nurturing learning environment where children can thrive both indoors and out, and after twenty plus years of teaching I can still say that I love my job and look forward to each and every day with the children.”

“Whether it’s working in the garden, cooking healthy foods, learning sounds or exploring the cultures of the world, we believe that hands-on fun is the best!” adds Coleman. “I feel so lucky to be able to provide Montessori education and live in lovely Alliston.”
