On Friday, September 27, members of the Tottenham Lions Club Inc. presented the Simcoe Manor with a cheque for $3001.23. The proceeds, raised during the Lions’ annual summer concert and through ongoing fundraising, will be used towards the purchase of a bus for the seniors – residents at the Simcoe Manor in Beeton – so they might attend events throughout the community and beyond.

The Lions are also hosting a series of four workshops, open to community members in the Town of New Tecumseth.

This is a first time the Club has carried out such a project, and topics are of interest to the general public.

The first workshop has already taken place, on September 11, on the issue of fraud. The presenter was Shawn Evans, a member of the O.P.P., who has several years experience dealing with fraud issues.

During the workshop participants learned how sophisticated fraud methods have become today and how easily one can become a victim without knowing until it is too late.

According to Evans reported fraud is only five per cent of fraud that takes place today in Canada. If one encounters a fraud situation it should be reported to the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre by calling 1-888-495-8501.

The second workshop in the series is Power of Attorney/Estate Planning. Focus of the workshop will be the role and duties of the power of attorney, importance of having a will as well as issues around estate planning. The presenter will be Trish Ward, a lawyer, who has years of experience with the workshop topic. The workshop will take place Wednesday, October 9.

The third workshop “Keep Your Hands on the Wheel & Your Eyes on the Road” will be presented by the O.P.P. and will focus on distracted driving which is a serious issue on our roads and highways today. What is distracted driving? What are the rules? What are the penalties? What can you do to reduce fatalities on our roads today. The workshop will take place on Wednesday, November 13th.

The fourth workshop is “Getting Out Of Debt”. This will be a special 2-hour event. Getting out of debt is not easy, but it is possible with a little work. Workshop presenter will be Dr. Cael Cohen. The workshop will take place on January 8, 2020.

Workshops are one hour in length and run from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 pm. unless otherwise stated. Workshops will be held in the Lions Room at the Tottenham Community Centre. Cost is one or more food items for the local food banks. For more information call 905 936-9647.
