Connect with Mayor and Council at Sunday’s levee

Connect with Mayor Rick Milne and the rest of New Tecumseth Council this Sunday afternoon as the Town of New Tecumseth hosts the Mayor & Council New Year’s Levee.
This year’s event, which boasts a free skate, will take place at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre (7300 Industrial Parkway, Alliston) from 12 noon to 3 p.m., with ice skating available from 12.30 p.m. to 1.50 p.m.
A levee is a New Year’s tradition for leaders across Canada at all levels of government to meet their constituents, share the spirit of the season, and engage on issues that are important to the community.
The New Tecumseth Mayor & Council levee has been an annual event since 2017, but its roots in Canada date back far longer.
The first recorded levee in Canada was recorded on the first day of 1646 in what was then New France. This tradition has endured to present day, one with a particularly Canadian feel. The Queen’s representative in Ontario, Lieutenant-Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell, for instance, started 2020 with a Levee in Thunder Bay.
In some communities, the Levee was a tradition that had been put on the backburner for many years but has experienced a resurgence in the last decade.
