Limited baseball activities returning to local diamonds

July 9, 2020   ·   0 Comments

Local ball diamonds are seeing a slow return to some activity on the field.

Many municipalities are now allowing at least some parks to re-open although there are a lot of restrictions still in place. Different areas have still not opened parks for any activity.

Some local clubs have started summer training, however there will most likely be no games played this summer.

There have been tournaments organized for later in the summer but the logistics of transporting a team to a remote location provides additional challenges – especially in farther away towns that will require overnight accommodations.

Tottenham Minor Baseball has now pulled some players out of the doldrums to start training for the season. For most of the players, this is the first time this season they have had a chance to get outside and throw the ball around.

The Tottenham Bantam team met on the diamond at the Tottenham Community Centre to get in some practice.

The team practiced safely and are adhering to measures and restrictions required by the Town, Ontario Baseball, and local health authorities.

Players were spaced out on the field during practice to maintain social distancing measures. Team members also took a break every 30 minutes to sanitize equipment as well as their own hands.

Coaches provide all the necessary sanitizing material and also sanitized equipment such as the bats and balls.

The team coaches stressed that they are complying with all required measures and also had the proper permits in place for booking the diamond.

For the players, it was a welcome relief from staying home. Players normally get out on the ball diamonds in early May to start training so they were happy to enter the park and start throwing the ball around.

Any baseball activity this summer will be determined by Baseball Ontario who are taking the lead from the provincial government and local health authorities.
