Popularity of cycling surges during sports cancellations

July 16, 2020   ·   0 Comments

With many sports and team activities cancelled this summer, people are looking for other ways to get outside and enjoy the summer weather.

Cycling has seen a huge surge in popularity this year.

A naturally social distancing sport, it has become one of the top physical activities being enjoyed this summer with a lot of new riders and many others getting back into the sport after giving it up years ago.

While long distance road cycling is still popular among some groups and clubs, mountain bike-type riding is the one is attracting a lot of new riders.

Mountain bike riding gets you off the roads and into more rural areas and is seen by many riders as a safer alternative than trying to compete with cars on a busy road.

“The sport is drawing in people from all over the place,” said Jeff Lemon, proprietor at Cycling Elements. “One thing we’re seeing right now is people are bringing these old bikes out of their basement and coming to us and saying ‘I need this fixed.’ What we’re seeing is this huge influx of families wanting to ride together and that guy who used to ride in high school and ten years later he wants to start riding again. It’s bringing all these new people into the bike store.”

The demand for bicycle services and accessories has been huge. Dealers are having difficult replenishing their stock.

“It’s all about trails and dirt roads,” Jeff said of the style of biking people want to do. “Road cycling has been on a steady decline for the past five years. People are sick of the cars and they like the added safety of riding on trails and dirt roads.”

The bike store has had its best season ever, exceeding their previous best year of sales by over 50 per cent.

Local trails have been very busy with more individual riders as well as groups getting out for a ride this summer.
