Stevenson welcomes back visitors in phased-in approach

Stevenson Memorial Hospital (SMH) has started to phase-in visitors at the hospital, allowing them to be at the bedside of loved ones as of Monday, July 20.

Careful consideration and planning has been placed on the process, which the Hospital is naming “Phase 2”.

In this phase, long-term patients (10 days or more) are eligible to have a visitor for one hour during a scheduled time two times per week between the hours of 2 – 6 p.m.

“It is so important for patients to be able to visit with their loved ones. Family and caregivers are

a critical component of their circle of care,” says Carrie Jeffreys, VP Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Executive, SMH.

“For this reason, we are happy to welcome some visitors back in the Hospital, using a phased approach that is safe for everyone,” she adds.

As SMH manages their response to COVID-19, the phased approach will allow flow through the Hospital to be controlled with a booked visiting schedule.

Patients that qualify for a visitor will have a primary visitor and a secondary designate in case the primary individual cannot make the scheduled time.

Visitors must be over 16 years of age and may include, but are not limited to a family member, caregiver or support person. Priority will be given to family members of palliative patients or those that have extenuating circumstances.

All visitors will be screened at the main entrance and only permitted if they screen negative for COVID-19. Masks are required to be worn for the entire visit, and visitors will not be permitted to use common areas of the Hospital. Visitors are to stay at the bedside for the duration of their visits and are not to leave the Hospital and return within the visit. The next phase will include visitors for short and long-term stay patients as well as for Emergency Department and outpatient visits in the future. For more information, please visit
