New Tec baseball players just glad to be on the diamond

A slight drizzle covered the ball diamond at the Tottenham Community Centre during a game on Sunday, August 16, but the players were happy to be out in the field and playing their sport.

There are only a handful of baseball clubs playing this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and most of them have limited games and competition.

Teams from the Aurora Titans organization have made the Tottenham diamond their home base this year and have been out there on weekends getting games in.

Several of the players are from New Tecumseth and play with the Aurora rep teams.

Sunday’s game was an in-club effort with the Titans U16 team up against the U18 squad.

There are several rules in place to keep everyone safe, but Titans U16 second baseman, Alliston’s Justin Fenn, said the rules don’t really affect the game much.

“We’re supposed to be six feet apart from each other,” Justin said of the rules surrounding the game. “We’re sanitizing between innings. When we go home, we sanitize all our equipment before coming back.”

There are some rules in effect on the diamond. There is only one umpire and the umpire calls the game from behind the pitchers mound. That makes it difficult when calling foul balls that are close to the fair play lines.

“The umpire is behind the mound now – that’s very different,” Justin said. “In our league we aren’t supposed to throw the ball around after an out. Other than that, it’s not really different when you’re on the field. For foul balls we’re mainly relying on the catchers to call it on best judgment. The coaches will also determine a foul ball.”

The Titans are playing each other but also have a few other teams they are playing for some games.

“We have two teams this year with our Titans Club,” Justin explained. “We’re playing with our own teams and three other teams that we play, and we only play them so we don’t play the whole league.”

The Titans play teams from Kingston, Clarington, and Mississauga.

Justin said that the despite the restrictions and limited play, “It is, what it is. We’re just glad to get out and play baseball.”
