Mini dog festival is coming to Tottenham in early September

Dog owners in Tottenham and the surrounding area are getting the chance to cheer them on at the Dog Lover Days lure course on September 13.

Kawigga Pet Products is hosting a small dog festival in the community where canines can chase a small white mechanical lure that travels along a fenced-in four lane track filled with fun obstacles and agility gear for them to climb through.

“Unbeknownst to the dog, they’re now flying over bars and jumping through hoops and having a great time chasing that darn lure,” said Mark Gross of Dog Lover Days.

“At most dog events, there isn’t anything for your dog to do; it’s more for the human to watch agility dogs, dock diving and stuff like that, but for us, it was important to come up with something that every dog can do.”

The event will also feature multiple vendors for both pets and people as well as a food truck, while staying in accordance with public health guidelines around COVID-19 such as physical distancing and sanitation, noted Rose Drektraan, who’s hosting the festival.

“Full COVID protocols will be in place to keep everyone safe and still have an enjoyable, exciting and entertaining afternoon,” she said.

“It’s right here on our property, we’ve got 10 acres, so there’s lots of places to sit and just talk with family or whoever you’re coming with. We’re going to make it a very nice community event, socializing in a safe manner. It won’t be crowded,” Drektraan added.

“After all of the worries and challenges that have happened this year, I thought this would be something nice for the community to enjoy.”

Gross said Dog Lover Days ran around 90 events across North America last year and his favourite part is watching the pet owners’ reaction to their dog running the course.

“They go ballistic, they love watching their dog do it,” he enthused. “I don’t want to toot my own horn but they just love it, they come back for more all the time.”

Drektraan told the Times they’re finishing up preparations for the dog festival and are eager to see the community come out for a fun time with their pets.

Kawigga Pet Products is located on the 10th Line in Tottenham, just West of Schomberg and it costs $10 to participate in the lure course. Drektraan is asking that people who plan on attending and using the course to register prior by email at kawigga@gmail.com.

“It’s time to get the dogs out again,” said Gross.
