Osprey getting a new home at Coventry Park

September 4, 2020   ·   0 Comments

With the installation of a new lighting system at the Coventry Park baseball diamonds, local slo-pitch teams will be able to get a few more games in.

However, a family of osprey will need to move from their current perch behind the right field if they decide to vacation at the park again next year.

The nest has been there for several years, and players get to see the newest birds peer over the top of the nest every spring before they finally get their wings and fly away.

The new lights went up August 12, but work crews had to wait to install a bank of lights on one light pole because of the nest.

The pole is behind right field on diamond number one and lights had already been installed to illuminate that diamond.

When the new set of diamonds closest to the parking lot got its lights, the plan was to use the existing pole and place lights on the opposite side to light left field.

Unfortunately the osprey were there first and disturbing the nest would go against Ministry of Natural Resources directives.

The company installing the lights had to wait for a green light from the Ministry before moving ahead with the lighting plan. The Ministry put a time-line on the project so they could determine work wouldn’t disturb any fledglings or eggs in the nest.

Once it was determined the young birds had indeed vacated, the removal of the nest was within the rules and regulations of the Province’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act.

In an effort to support the osprey in its natural habitat, the Town will have a nesting platform installed close by and the nest will be relocated. Osprey tend to return annually to their regular nesting place.

The new nest will come with two man-made perches to make the birds feel at home.

If the birds return next season they’ll have a good vantage point to watch the slo-pitch games in the park.
