GMHL has started scheduled games but only in the west

October 29, 2020   ·   0 Comments

The Greater Metro Hockey League has started playing games, but only in the West Division located in Northern Alberta.

In Ontario, the schedule is delayed as league executives are still waiting to see how the next phase of re-opening in the province will affect hockey.

Most, if not all junior level leagues in the province are in the same boat. With the current limits on people allowed to gather indoors, even if the games go ahead, they won’t be able to allow spectators into the facility.

That will affect the bottom line for the teams as well as making it difficult to get sponsorships from business who can’t be guaranteed a full season will even happen.

The GMHL now has games on the Ontario schedule with November 15, set as the opening day for play.

The Tottenham Thunder are slated to play their first game in Alliston against the New Tecumseth Civics on Thursday, November 19.

The Thunder’s first home game will be two nights later on Saturday, November 21, at the Tottenham Community Centre arena.

Currently those are the only two games are on the list and the League schedule does not extend past November.

Interesting to note, the Thunder are entering the 2020 / 21 season with yet another new name.

The Tottenham team, formerly known as the Steam, rebranded as the Tottenham Express earlier in the summer. However, there is already a local football team with the same name.

The second change made the name Thunder to avoid confusion with the other sport.

There is no other news on the GMHL website indicating what the league’s long-term plans for this season are going to be.

With the current situation making planning and scheduling very difficult, hockey leagues in the province are working on day-to-day and week-to-week planning to see if there can be a reasonable expectation for a season this year.
