Alliston Curling Club gets back on the ice

November 19, 2020   ·   0 Comments

The Alliston Curling Club is back playing their sport although there are many protocols that are in place to ensure a safe environment.

“We started league play the week after Thanksgiving,” said club president Susan Froud. “We have a full protocol in place that aligns with the CurlOn return to play guidelines.”

At first the Club only allowed members to enter the minimized “social bubble.” They have equipped the Club with extra sanitizing supplies and have signage in place encouraging people to keep a social distance both when on the ice and in the club room.

Volunteers are sanitizing common areas after each draw on the ice.

They also have a symptom and return to play tracking system to monitor who has been in the facility. That includes taking phone numbers and a report line in case there are any COVID-related concerns.

“We are also adjusting to meet regulatory changes as they are occurring,” Ms. Froud explained.

The Club has several league setups including men’s night, women’s night, and open daytime jitneys.

They also have a Friday night mixed league.

CurlON, the governing body of the sport in Ontario, and Curling Canada, the national body, have issued guidelines for proper behaviour when the the sheets.

While the guidelines include typical instructions like sanitizing common areas and playing equipment, there are also guidelines that will change how the game is played. That includes positioning of players on the ice during a game.

While some curling clubs across the province have opened and are actively playing games, many others have delayed getting back on the ice this year.

Some clubs made the decision to hold off until January before they resume club activities. It is up to each curling club to make a decision on when they will allow play on the ice.

Curling is a popular sport across the country with over 1,000 active clubs.
