GMHL schedule still in doubt for this year

December 4, 2020   ·   0 Comments

The Greater Metro Hockey League has not released a schedule for this season other than a couple of local exhibition games.

The League’s West Division has been playing games in its Alberta loop, but even that division has called an early break in the season.

Effective November 27, the West Division will be commencing its holiday break and resume playing in early January.

The Government of Alberta’s health restrictions allow for teams to continue to play, however the League has decided the best course of action at this time is to go on an extended break. The season will then be extended into April and May of 2021 to make up for the lost time.

In Ontario, there are a handful of exhibition games on the schedule for the first week of December.

Beyond that, there is no schedule listed and no games slated for the rest of the month.

Locally, the Tottenham Thunder are scheduled to play the New Tecumseth Civics on Thursday, December 3, at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre in Alliston.

With current COVID restrictions, that means no fans will be allowed in the building to watch the game.

The GMHL is still hopeful of getting a season in this year, but with current restrictions it seems unlikely most junior level hockey leagues will have any kind of real season this year.
