Vacant Tottenham site will have townhouses, not a church

At one time, it was a rolling farm field planted with corn that signaled the upcoming curve on Tottenham Road that led into the centre of town.

That hill was leveled by the developer when a new subdivision was built at the 3rd Line and Tottenham road.

As the streets filled in with new homes and a new plaza on the 3rd Line, that area of ground bordering Tottenham Road, north of the 3^rd, was left vacant waiting for future plans.

At one time there was a sign on the property advertising the property as being available for “a place of worship.”

However, that sign was removed over a year ago.

The original plan called for a church to be built on the site, but no congregation was interested in building there.

After being unable to find a group to take over and build on the site, the site plan was changed and approved to allow the construction of 59 townhouses on the vacant land.

The change caused frustration with some Honeyfield community residents who bought property in the subdivision on the understanding that there would be a church on site, citing that a new block of townhouse in that location would be unsightly and cause an increase in traffic.

Each unit will have two parking spaces and a lot to accommodate 16 more parking spaces.

Some residents expressed their concerns on a local Tottenham Facebook page saying they were told the property would have only a church and no more residential type of building.

Construction is already underway.

The development will generate around $2.7 million in development charges.
