Snowmobile Club waiting for more ground cover

January 15, 2021   ·   0 Comments

Snowmobile enthusiasts in the area will have to wait a little longer to get out on the trails this year.

The Alliston & District Snowmobile Club has not yet opened the sanctioned trails for sledders due to lack of ground cover.

There are over 30,000 km of interconnected snowmobile trails in Ontario, however they don’t all necessarily receive the amount of snow needed to be open at the same time.

The local club is waiting for more ground cover before opening the trails. Riding on ungroomed trails or areas with lack of proper cover can result in damage to property.

Club executive are urging local sledders to stay off the trails for the time being and respect local landowners whose property the trails pass over.

“We have received several complaints from landowners regarding snowmobiles on closed trails as well as fields without trails,” the Club posted on their website. “The snow and ground conditions were absolutely not favourable to snowmobiling yet and this has resulted in land use permission being immediately revoked.”

Snowmobile clubs across the province rely on the cooperation of landowners who allow the trails to cross over their property. Volunteers used machines to groom the trails to make them safe for riding.

All snowmobilers in the province who use the trail system are required to purchase a trail pass that is placed on the front of the machine in a visible location.

Trails are monitored by trail marshals as well as police to ensure compliance. Those riding the trails without a valid permit could be subject to a fine.

Clubs in Ontario all work with the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs who operated 16 districts across the province and provides a voice for organized snowmobiling in the province.

The sport has seen an increase in activity this season. With so many sports and events cancelled, many new riders are taking up the sport and buying sleds.
