Mandatory hotel quarantine now in effect for air travellers

If you are thinking of leaving the country and returning by air, there are some new rules you should be aware of.

The federal government has announced the start of mandatory hotel quarantine for air travellers entering Canada.

As of February 22, people arriving at Toronto Pearson International Airport, Vancouver International Airport, Calgary International Airport, and Montreal-Trudeau International Airport will be required to check in for a three-night stay at a government approved hotel as they await the results of a COVID-19 test.

People arriving are required to take the test at the airport upon their arrival.

This test is on top of an initial negative test result for a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test that must be taken 72 hours prior to getting on an aircraft.

If this doesn’t make you re-think plans for travelling, the hotel expense will be paid for by the traveller at a cost of around $2,000, with that price including room fees, security, infection control and transportation.

You must also book you quarantine hotel room prior to your departure from the country.

Prime Minister Justine Trudeau called it a “sufficient quarantine plan.”

People staying at these hotels will only be permitted to leave once they get the results of their COVID-19 test.

The Public Health Agency of Canada said security companies have been hired and personnel trained as screening officers under the Quarantine Act. They will be checking to make sure individuals are following the proper protocols.

“We’re not trying to punish people, we’re trying to keep people safe,” the Prime Minister said.

People returning to Canada via land borders will also be required to show proof of a negative test. That must be taken within 72 hours of arriving at the border. They must also undergo a 14-day quarantine.

People who don’t play by the rules could risk a fine or possible jail time.
