Fire rating danger for New Tecumseth set to HIGH

April 2, 2021   ·   0 Comments

With the warmer weather now approaching, there are more opportunities to plan a party in the back yard and get the fire pit going.

But you may want to re-think your plan on getting a fire started to roast marshmallows – especially if you are residing in a closely packed subdivision where the risk of fire is heightened by embers that can rise and land on your neighbour’s roof.

The New Tecumseth Fire Department and the Town have now issued an alert setting the Fire Danger Rating in the region as “high.”

With the snow all gone, fields, wooded areas, and land with brush are now exposed and drying out creating an environment that could easily catch fire if exposed to a flame or burning embers.

If you do need to create an open fire, you will need a permit issued by the town.

The Town’s open air By-Law states: “No person shall set a fire or permit a fire in the Town of New Tecumseth without first obtaining the necessary fire permit.”

Open Air Burning Permits are available to print online only and must be purchased in person at the Alliston and Beeton Administration offices.

Permit fees are $15.00.

Outdoor Wood Burning Appliance Permits are available in-person at the Beeton Administration office. The issuance of this permit requires an inspection of the appliance prior to approval. A one-time fee of $53.00 applies to the application.

If you are a tenant, you must provide written permission from the property owner at the time of purchase.

If you are planning an open-air fire, you must take extreme caution with all open flames.

This includes having adequate tools and water to extinguish the fire if the need arises.

A person must be at the fire location at all times.

With the warmer weather and a high alert when it comes to fire ratings, caution must be taken when creating any outdoor fire.
