Stuff a cruiser event helps Food Bank stock the shelves

April 2, 2021   ·   0 Comments

It has been a challenging year for everyone and with so many people staying at home, the Good Shepherd Food Bank in Alliston has seen the numbers of people donating decline.

While people haven’t forgotten about the Food Bank, the fact that residents are avoiding visiting places they would normally go means they aren’t dropping off donations quite as much as they were in previous years.

The Auxiliary Branch of the OPP’s Nottawasaga Detachment were out at several local locations on Saturday, March 27, asking shoppers to make a donation during their “Stuff a Cruiser” event.

They were seeking non-perishable food donations as well as gift cards to help re-supply the Food Bank in time for the Easter holiday.

“We are in the parking lot at Giant Tiger and Zehrs today,” explained OPP Auxiliary officer Kyle Jones over the weekend. “We’re getting everything can for the Food Bank here in Alliston and making sure it’s stocked up for Easter. We’ll be at the Food Bank today to drop it off and weigh it and see how much we managed to collect. They told us they were really short – the demand at the Food Bank is going up. We started at ten o’clock and we’ll be here until three o’clock. We’re asking for any non-perishables. Giant Tigers is taking the cash that people are donating and they will turn that into a gift card and then the Food Bank can come out and buy what they’re missing.”

Food Banks around the country have seen an increase in demand for their services since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With many people suddenly out of work or having their work hours reduced, more and more people are turning to the Food Bank for help.
