The Sunday Concerts in the Park are again happening every weekend at Keogh Park in Tottenham.

The summer series is made possible with the involvement of local sponsors including the County of Simcoe and the Town of New Tecumseth Arts and Culture, CRIC, the BTBIA, the Tottenham Chamber of Commerce, and the Tottenham Legion. Local business sponsors include Trevor’s Roof Repairs, Budget Blinds, McGoey Bros Insurance, Helen Mabee, and Tottenham Home Hardware.

Singer/songwriter David Stone opened the show on Sunday, August 22, with a performance of original music.

The Barrie-based artist grew up in Collingwood and is pretty much a lifelong musician after picking up the guitar at age 11.

“I’ve been performing since high school,” he explained. “Pretty much when I graduated high school I went into performing. When I was in high school, I wasn’t listening to a lot of acoustic music. I started playing in the school choir and the church choir, and that’s when it really acoustic and folky, and that’s what really got me into that. I took music in elementary school and in high school and did a music co-op. I sort of lived in the music room. I had a really good music teacher for a couple of years who saw more in me than I did, because he really encouraged me.”

A multi-instrumentalist, David plays guitar, piano, drums, bass and harmonica.

He plays all the instruments when he makes a recording.

Since 2011, he has recorded ten albums or EPs.

“The first one was an easy go. It was something I started when I was 15 and recorded when I was 19,” he explained. “So, I had four years for the first one. Then I put one out in ’11, and one in ’12, then one every subsequent year. Originally, I was playing in bands and recording was just an outlet. I play other instruments so I just sat down and did everything myself, I didn’t have to answer to anyone. It was my own little escape. Once I stopped playing in bands I was used to my own routine, and I record. I have the song on guitar and voice, then fill in the rest.”

When he performs live, he generally does original music, but said in some venues he mixes it up with cover tunes to keep the audience happy. However, he said for the most part, he believes people just want to see a good live performance and hear some good music.

A young father with one child and on the way, he said he would like his career in music to become his “day job.”

“This is kind of my ‘day job’ right now. I’m with my daughter during the day and perform at night.”

The Sunday concert also featured the Beeton Boomers who performed a variety of rock tunes from the 60s to the 90s.
